JAMAL MURRAY’S LOVE LETTER TO THE GAME

One game, one language – BSTN for New Balance Basketball.

Basketball has a way of giving you something before you even know how to put it into words. A place to find yourself, people to grow with, and a reason to keep showing up. For NBA champion Jamal Murray, it’s a connection that goes far beyond the game itself. And in Denver, that connection runs deep.

A Game That Gives Back

Jamal Murray knows what basketball can do for you. As a key figure in the Denver Nuggets’ 2023 championship run, he’s made his mark at the highest level of the game. But his relationship with basketball goes beyond the rings, the highlights, and the bright lights of the NBA.

At its core, the game is about showing up. Learning how to take a fall and get back up. Figuring out who you are, one possession at a time. It’s about the people beside you, the sound of the ball hitting the net, and the memories that stay with you long after you leave the court.

That’s the sentiment behind Jamal’s love letter to basketball. A reminder that you don’t need to speak the same language, come from the same background, or follow the same path to understand what the game means. Sometimes, all it takes is a ball, a basket, and a place to play.

Denver, united by the Court

Denver knows a thing or two about basketball. The city’s place in the game has only grown in recent years, with the Nuggets bringing home their first NBA championship in 2023. But the culture of basketball here extends far beyond the arena and the professional game.

To get a feel for it, we took to the local courts. From Washington Park, known to locals as Wash Park, to neighborhood spots on the outskirts of the city, with the Rocky Mountains stretching out in the background, and rooftop courts framed by the downtown skyline, each location offered a different perspective on the same love for the game.

The faces changed from court to court. Different generations, different backgrounds, different stages of their basketball journeys. Some have spent years developing their game; others are only just getting started. Some bring their experience as coaches, others their energy as young players looking to make their mark. Yet the moment the ball starts bouncing, those differences become part of what makes the game special.

Take Mario Caetano, for example. As a coach of the MSU Denver Roadrunners women’s basketball team and the father of young baller Makai, he experiences the game from two different perspectives. His story reflects something bigger than any one player: basketball creates connections across generations and genders, bringing people together through a shared passion.

That sense of community is what we wanted to capture. Not just the game as it’s played at the highest level, but the everyday moments that keep basketball alive: the runs after school, the lessons passed down from one generation to the next, the friendships built between games, and the courts that become a part of who you are.

Because basketball doesn’t need much to bring people together. And its impact is rarely limited to what happens between the lines.

Built for the Love of the Game

For this project, we teamed up with New Balance Basketball to explore that connection between the game, the people who play it, and the places they call home.

At the heart of the new collection is the New Balance P400, a performance basketball shoe designed for the demands of the court. Alongside it, the accompanying apparel brings the collection together, connecting performance and basketball style in a way that feels natural both on and off the court.

But the collection is only one part of the story. What matters just as much is the culture around it: the hours spent working on your game, the people who push you to get better, and the moments that remind you why you started playing in the first place.

That’s what makes basketball bigger than the box score. It’s a game built on repetition, resilience, and connection. Whether you’re chasing a championship, coaching the next generation, or simply meeting your friends for a game at your local court, the feeling is familiar.

A big thank you to New Balance Basketball for trusting us with this project, to NBA champion Jamal Murray for sharing his perspective and helping set the tone, and to all the local players who welcomed us onto their courts and made this story what it is.

Different people. Different paths. One game that connects us all.
