While it still feels incredibly surreal, it has already been a year since the tragic accident that claimed the life of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi and seven others on January 26th, 2020. After the initial shock that has rocked the basketball community around the globe, a plethora of stories, anecdotes and memories have been shared by various members of the hoops world, showcasing the enormous impact that Kobe had and the legacy he leaves behind.

As we still mourn the passing of a true icon of our culture and a prodigy of the next generation, we have compiled some of our favorites among the thousands of stories that have been told over the last year. They showcase some rare capabilities and a few of the unique personality traits that made the Black Mamba so unforgettable.

During the memorial event at Staples Center, Shaq shared this heartwarming anecdote that brought a smile to everyone’s face, at least for a brief moment.

On the All The Smoke podcast, Stephen Jackson recounts precisely why it was simply impossible to talk trash to Kobe Bryant.

Duke and USA Basketball Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski joined his former player JJ Reddick on his podacst to explain, why he might be the only coach in history to actually demand that Kobe “shoot the freakin’ basketball”.

During the NBA All Star Game in Oakland, back in 2000, Gary Payton took Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant to the side for a secret coaching session. An opportunity the ever-competitive Bryant took full advantage of, as KG explained back in February.

During the same interview, the Big Ticket went even further and shares some amazing details about he and Bryant almost became teammates in 2007.

This story of a ticked off Mamba walking into the Sixers’ locker room and leaving a message for Andre Iguodala, told by Iggy himself, is as Kobe as it gets.
