THIS IS TRASH: NIKE SPACE HIPPIE

The grey/volt Nike Space Hippie 04 releases at BSTN on Thursday, June 11th.

Nike’s mission is simple: create a shoe with the brand’s lowest carbon footprint yet by using trash to make it. The groundbreaking new approach is diverting factory scraps from landfills and waterways, spinning yarn from a heap of recycled materials, and using Nike Grind rubber to turn manufacturing waste into new shoes. Made of 25%-50% recycled materials by weight, the different Space Hippie models are each their own experiments in progress, because today’s innovations can significantly impact the way that sports are played tomorrow. This is the story of trash transformed.

The Space Hippie 04, a women’s silhouette, is the first shoe from the eponymous line to drop at BSTN — with addtional models following shortly. From the upper to the outsole, the Space Hippie 04 is made of at least 25% recycled material by weight. Not only is it the most lightweight silhouette within the collection, it also has the lowest carbon footprint. Its ‘Space Waste Yarn’ upper includes about 75% recycled content by weight and is made from recycled plastic bottles, t-shirts and yarn scraps. A soft, Crater Foam midsole combines Nike grind with a blend of foams for stability and a unique aesthetic.
