CASIO X BACK TO THE FUTURE

From the Hoverboard made by Mattel to the Nike Air Mag, inventions from the iconic Back To The Future films have made their way from the movie screen to the actual hands and feet of fans and become desirable collectables. (With the NBA season and World Series about to start, that Almanac would come in handy, too.) And for the franchise’s 40th anniversary, Casio is bringing back a piece of BTTF lore that is not only way more affordable than a DeLorean but also more practical on a daily basis.

The CA-500WEBF calculator watch is based on the 1980s best-seller and this special edition collaboration with Back To The Future features a watch face design inspired by the film’s iconic Time Machine taillights and OUTATIME license plate.

A limited edition release, the Casio watch comes in special packaging that mimics a vintage videotape case and features an engraving of an illustration of the flux capacitor on the back of the metal case, another subtle yet distinct hint making this piece a true collectors’ item with everyday usability.

The collaborative Casio x Back To The Future CA-500WEBF-1AER releases at BSTN on Wednesday, October 22nd, only while supplies last. Pick up yours via the button below !

Aside from Scarface, few movies have been referenced as heavily in hip hop music as Back to the Future. The film’s time-travel theme naturally connects to a culture built on evolution, reinvention, and artists’ hustle to be the next big thing. Style has always been currency in rap – and when a movie’s main character is called McFly and rides a car with gull-wing doors, it’s not hard to see why rappers keep embracing BTTF references. In fact, the list of nods is almost endless already:

The love for the film runs deep – from lyrics to song titles, mixtapes, and visuals. A$AP Rocky’s Back to the Future is just one of countless song titles that reference the movie’s name or spirit. Ludacris named a mixtape 1.21 Gigawatts as a nod to the power needed to fuel the DeLorean. Kanye West didn’t hide his love for the film either: On the Graduation artwork, the Dropout Bear wears Nike Air Mags. And in the album’s Good Morning video, said Bear can be seen “hop(ping) in the DeLorean,” just as the tracks’ lyrics describe.

Some artists even built entire identities around the movie: Detroit rapper Dusty McFly took his name directly from Marty, while Rockie Fresh featured a DeLorean with full movie outfit in his Into The Future video (wearing Air Mags, because duh). The title of his accompanying mixtape? Driving 88, as an homage to the speed the DeLorean takes to time-travel in the movie.
