REST IN PEACE D’ANGELO

On Tuesday, October 14th, the music community mourned the loss of Michael Eugene Archer, better known as D’Angelo, who passed away at the age of 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed the news, noting that he had faced the illness away from the public eye – true to the reserved manner that defined much of his career. Over the past three decades, the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and four-time Grammy winner became a key voice in contemporary soul, inspiring generations of artists and listeners alike.

With just three albums – Brown Sugar, Voodoo, and Black Messiah – D’Angelo managed to reshape the sound of modern music: His 1995 debut Brown Sugar became a cornerstone of what would later be known as Neo Soul, blending the warmth of classic R&B with the edge of contemporary hip hop and laying the foundation for a new generation of artists.

As one of the founding members of the Soulquarians, alongside Questlove, James Poyser, and J Dilla, as well as Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, Common, and Yasiin Bey, D’Angelo further expanded that vision. The collective’s beginnings trace back to the sessions for his landmark Voodoo LP in 2000 – a project that bridged soul, hip hop, and jazz and helped define the sound whose influence still resonates today. His final studio project, Black Messiah, reaffirmed that position in 2014, translating his signature sound into a politically charged statement on identity and culture.

Today, D’Angelo’s impact remains unmistakable. Tributes from DJ Premier, Tyler, The Creator, Joy Denalane, and Jill Scott, among countless others, highlight the breadth of his influence. To quote Tyler, The Creator’s comment under an Instagram post about D’Angelo’s passing: “i hate this so much man so lucky to have been alive at the same time he blessed us” (sic).

Rest in peace, D’Angelo.
