Combining the traditional influences of the 1989 GEL-EXTREME with modern cushioning, the EX89 by asics was originally designed by Toshikazu Kayano in the late 1980s as his first design project at asics. The sneaker impresses with a layered leather construction combined with colorblocking that matches the iconic team uniforms of the era. It features FF BLAST cushioning that provides lightweight impact absorption for everyday comfort, as well as a curved heel shape that enhances comfort underfoot in everyday situations. The pattern of the outsole is meant to reflect an aerial view of a city. This functional grip feature was originally inspired by the designer's first business trip to the United States in 1987.
